For those researchers working in the field of human history, the chronology of events remains a major element of reflection. Archaeologists have access to various techniques for dating archaeological sites or the objects found on those sites. There are two main categories of dating methods in archaeology : indirect or relative dating and absolute dating. Relative dating includes methods that rely on the analysis of comparative data or the context eg, geological, regional, cultural in which the object one wishes to date is found. This approach helps to order events chronologically but it does not provide the absolute age of an object expressed in years.

Archaeological Dating: Stratigraphy and Seriation
The most common method for dating artifacts and biological materials is the carbon 14 C method. However, it poses a serious problem for deep-time advocates because it cannot be used for dating anything much older than 50, years. After that time virtually all measureable 14 C should be gone. Many archaeologists use this method to date pottery and, consequently, the sedimentary layers in which they appear. Pottery contains certain crystalline materials. The longer the pottery is in the ground, the more radiation dose it will absorb, causing more electrons to be excited into trap states. When scientists pull pottery from the ground, they use heat or lasers to de-excite these electrons out of their trap states back to their original state.

Absolute dating can be achieved through the use of historical records and through the analysis of biological and geological patterns resulting from annual climatic variations, such as tree rings dendrochronology and varve analysis. Since the physical sciences contributed a number of absolute dating techniques that have had a revolutionary effect on archaeology and geology. These techniques are based upon the measurement of radioactive processes radiocarbon; potassium-argon, uranium-lead, uranium-thorium, thorium-lead, etc. Other techniques are occasionally useful, for example, historical or iconographic references to datable astronomical events such as solar eclipses archaeoastronomy.
Radiometric dating , radioactive dating or radioisotope dating is a technique which is used to date materials such as rocks or carbon , in which trace radioactive impurities were selectively incorporated when they were formed. The method compares the abundance of a naturally occurring radioactive isotope within the material to the abundance of its decay products, which form at a known constant rate of decay. Together with stratigraphic principles , radiometric dating methods are used in geochronology to establish the geologic time scale. By allowing the establishment of geological timescales, it provides a significant source of information about the ages of fossils and the deduced rates of evolutionary change. Radiometric dating is also used to date archaeological materials, including ancient artifacts.
